Pratheep Dance
Pratheep or small candle contained in tiny pot shaped like a dish is always lit to decorate all around the house during Loy Kratong Festival which is also called Yee Peng in
Northern Thai dialect. This festival is known to foreigners as Floating Lantern Festival. The Lanterns are made from leaves and trunk of banana tree in the shape of lotus. The
candle or the pratheep is put inside, and floated along the water to worship the goddess of the river Kong Ka. Loy Kratong Festival is held during the full moon at the end of
October or the beginning of November every year since the ancient time. This dance was established to represent the importance, grace and tradition of Northern Thai Loy
Kratong Festival.
Fawn Darb-Swordmanship
Sword is weapon for fighting used by ancient warriors. However, in time of peace, the sword is used artistically in dancing. Dancing is performed generally as ritual, with
pupils offering respects to their teachers. The occasion is good for a gathering of friends, and a good time held by soldiers. Today, however, dancing is performed only in
memory of the good old days for the new generation. The performers of Fawn Darb use up to 10 swords while dancing, which calls for artistic excellence and experience.
Fawn Sao Mai
Fawn Sao Mai procedures for dancing, songs and music are all designed to display the act of pulling silk thread until weaving silk fabric for use in several occasions. It
displays local traditions, the art and occupation of Northern Thai women. The dancing can be performed by a single performer or in a group, the dancing is delicate, with
finesse, and sweet, reflecting individualism of the LannaThai ladies in ancient attire. On these occasions, popular songs include “Pan Fai Muang Nan [Spinning thread in
Nan province]” and “Long Mae Ping” [Along Maeping River]
Hill tribe Dancing
Hill Tribe dancing was created to exhibit traditional costume, way of dressing and the arts of the minor group of people in Chiangmai who choose to live in hilly areas.
Living in group of the same tribe, most of them have agricultrue as their occupation. Religion is combined with animism with different traditions for each group.
Fawn Tee
“Fon Tee” means “Umbrella Dance” in the Thai language. The dance performs the movements of using the umbrella and the identity of northern style dressing of Chiangmai.
The umbrella is made by hand and painted in northern unique style.
The Kingkala Bird Dancing
The Kingkala Bird dance or The Peacock Dance is popular among the Shan people of Mae Hong Son province. This dance has been performed for a very long time. The
dancers are dressed as peacock sand they imitate the bird’s action, such as walking or flying. The musical instruments used in this dance are the Ching or Cymbals, the
Mong or Gong and the Poojay Drum.
The Tea Leaf Picking Dance
The Tea Leaf Picking Dance is popular among the Yao. Normally, they leave their homes early in the morning to pick the tea leaves which they put out the dry in the sun.
While they are waiting for leaves to be dried, they join the dancing together. Once it starts to get dark they gather up the leaves in their baskets and return home.
Klong Sabatchai
“Klong Sabatchai” meaning “Drum with Flipping and Dancing” is praticed before fighting a battle. The rhythm of the drum is designed to incite soldiers before getting out in
the battle, the drum is also played to demoralized the enemy. In this nexus, the drummers are coomplished in the art of music and dancing and the show off their skills with
elbows, legs, heads and body movements. Drum is played in tune with the sound of cymbals merrily to give pleasure to listeners.
Ramwong
Ramwong is the art transformed from Ram Tone, which is the play popular in every province. The musical instruments used for dancing postures consist of cymbals,
castanets, and along drums. Afterwards, the University of Fine Arts has upgraded it up to standard, with contents of the songs, and rhym were newly somposed, including
postures which also were newly created, like the one you are seeing today. May we have the honor to invite you, all the guests to join Ramwong with the performers of
